Downstream Vendors

Reuse & Recycling

Also known as: Downstream vendor · DSV · downstream processors · recycling chain · downstream partners · Downstream recycler

Organizations that receive equipment, components, or materials from an ITAD or recycling provider for further handling, such as testing, repair, refurbishment, material separation, or recovery. A downstream chain may involve multiple vendors before final processing. Responsible oversight includes qualifying vendors, confirming their capabilities and applicable authorizations, and maintaining records of transfers and outcomes. R2 defines specific downstream requirements for its controlled streams.

What to ask about downstream processing

Ask which materials leave the primary facility, who receives them and which processing steps happen next. Confirm how the provider qualifies those facilities, checks the applicable scope of certifications or authorizations, and documents exceptions or changes in routing.

For a project with multiple destinations, request a closeout example that connects outbound transfers to final disposition. The evidence you need may differ for reuse, recycling and controlled materials.

Question to ask your ITAD provider

Which downstream vendors handle our equipment and materials, how are they qualified and monitored, and what evidence documents final disposition?
