NIST SP 800-88

Standards & Certifications

Also known as: NIST 800-88 · media sanitization guidelines

NIST guidance for developing a media sanitization program and selecting suitable methods. It is guidance, not a recycler certification.

How to use NIST SP 800-88 in an ITAD scope

Revision 2 is NIST's guidance on establishing a media sanitization program. Use it to discuss media types, information sensitivity, whether reuse is planned, and how the provider will document the selected method and outcomes.

Ask what happens if a device fails the selected process, who authorizes the next step, and how the final report identifies exceptions. A reference to NIST in a proposal should be backed by an agreed sanitization plan and usable records for your project.

How ecoTech handles it

ecoTech uses NIST SP 800-88 as the framework for choosing sanitization controls. Each project scope specifies the method, how results are verified, what records you receive, and how media that cannot be processed is handled.

Question to ask your ITAD provider
